Workpackage 1 is dedicated to the development of basic building blocks for ultra-compact Photonic Integrated Circuits (PIC). These building blocks consist of Straight waveguides (Photonic Crystal Waveguides of Photonic Wires), Tight Bends, Cavities, Splitters, Couplers, etc. Other components studied in this workpackages are coupling interfaces from and to Single Mode fiber for telecom wavelengths.

Objectives
Development of generic optical building blocks in high index contrast waveguides. Development of fibre couplers and simple functional elements. Determination of optimum material, design and method of processing using advanced optical characterisation.
