This workpackage addresses the issue of tailoring the wavelength response of high-contrast photonic microstructures. The use of high refractive index contrast microstructures yields compact devices with a very sharp wavelength response, but also places a high demand on fabrication accuracy. One aspect of this workpackage is therefore to establish the precision that we can routinely achieve in the fabrication of dispersive elements, another is to develop devices that can tolerate a certain degree of inaccuracy using novel designs.

The starting point is devices that have already been demonstrated (by partners and elsewhere) and refining them both theoretically and experimentally, optimising for dispersion strength, beam quality and low loss.

Objectives top

  • Establishment of device concepts based on periodic, high-contrast waveguides suitable for functional elements used in WDM systems, such as add-drop multiplexers.
  • Exploitation of the periodic nature of photonic crystals for wavelength selective elements.
  • Comparison of different physical mechanisms for wavelength selection, taking strength of dispersion and beam quality into account.
  • Assessment of suitability for WDM systems and precision with which specific wavelengths can be addressed, and in particular, whether components and Add/Drop multiplexers with 100GHz channel spacing are feasible in a photonic crystal based WDM system.
