The monolithic wavelength converter is an active device that is an immediate application of the more fundamental work in WP1. It makes use of the compact waveguide geometry and the transition regions between conventional waveguides and photonic microcircuits.

Objectives top

  • Use the results from WP1 to develop a monolithic wavelength converter based on nonlinear difference frequency generation and a periodic structure for phase matching.
  • Use the high power density available in tightly confined waveguides for strong nonlinear interaction.
  • Combine quantum well intermixing and photonic microstructures for novel, fully integrated and compact optoelectronic devices.
